Lesson 7

Psalms 71:23

23 My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you— I whom you have delivered.

If your guitar is not playing in tune, especially as you play up the neck, it might be time to adjust your intonation. An excellent way to check that is to play an open string and then play the same string at the 12th fret. If the note at the 12th fret is out of tune (more than a few cents off) from the open note, you probably need to adjust your intonation.

When intonation is set, the string length is adjusted by moving the saddle closer or farther from the bridge. A properly intonated guitar will improve the pitch accuracy over the entire fretboard.

DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH

You may not even realize you’re doing it, but it’s common for people to hold their breath while concentrating on guitar or something difficult. I see this all the time with my students. It’s good to break this habit as early as possible.

8th Note Rest
A "Rest" means exactly that, take a break and do not make a sound or play a note.
12/8 Time
12/8 is a compound time signature. It is based on the division of beats into groups of three. In 12/8, there are four larger beats, and each one divides into three eighth notes. This creates a 'swinging' rhythm often found in blues, gospel, and some forms of rock and roll.
